My College Experience : Foundation

I've been MIA for a hot minute but I'm back with a new post! I wanted to talk about my college experience a.k.a my foundation days. I feel like not many people talk about it and I think more people should. Before I started college I did a lot of research on what to expect. In Malaysia mainly, there isn't really anyone talking about it. Even if there's any, it's not something I can relate to. Most people talk about their diploma experience as opposed to foundation. So I'm gonna share my experience in hopes to help any of you out there who will be taking foundation.

To start off, I took foundation in arts which was a 1 year course. And no it doesn't have anything to do with drawing or painting or anything of that sort. Thought I should put that out there since most people think foundation in arts mean things that has got to do with drawing and such. Arts in my case means a non-science related course. Over the course of 1 year I had 3 semesters in which each semester consisted of 5 different subjects. I studied law, maths, accounts & finance, business and etc. I got to learn a variety of different things in the span of 1 year which was quite nice but also challenging to do when everything is so compact.

Before you decide to do foundation, you should really consider your options. Foundation might not be the best option for some because of how compact the course is. Essentially what you learn in 2/3 years of diploma is squeezed into 1 year. And that's a lot. Diploma from what I've heard is more relaxed and flexible. It doesn't mean it's easy but it's not as intense as foundation.

Personally I think that if you're unsure of what you want to do for your degree, foundation might be for you. Reason being, you'll get to learn subjects from different courses. I'm actually glad I got the chance to learn so many different subjects. Even though I ended up sticking to what I wanted from the beginning, there's nothing wrong with getting some extra knowledge innit?

Honestly my foundation days flew by. Literally. I'm now doing my degree and foundation feels like an eternity ago. It's definitely an advantage taking foundation because you only have to do it for a year. So by the age of 19 you'll already be doing your degree. Each semester without fail had a killer subject. In my opinion, you really can't afford to slack off. I feel like once you slack off you'll have to struggle to get back to the top. Provided that you want to do well (which you should).

I did really well in my first semester followed by a slight drop in my second semester and I made up for loss marks in my third semester. Thankfully I managed to bring up my cgpa in the last semester, phew! I was pleased with my final cgpa considering how much I struggled to do well. But all the studying and stress definitely paid off.

If there'e one thing I want anyone reading this to take from this post is that hard work, determination and consistency is key. If you practice those three things, I can assure you that you will excel. Take each and every challenge that comes your way with an open heart and always have a positive mind set. With that said, this is what worked for me. Unlike some, I'm not gifted in maths nor do I have an incredible memory so I did what worked for me. I may have had to work twice as hard but it's all good since it paid off.

I hope that answers any questions or doubts you might have had. Regardless of what you choose to study be it foundation, diploma or A-Levels, I wish you all the best. Enjoy your time while you can because it'll fly by. Don't worry about petty issues and crappy people you might meet along the way. Good luck!
